A little inspiration. A lot of “that’s perfect.”

THE GIFT JOURNAL · Gifts for children

Little people. Big imaginations.

Simple ways to choose a gift for the stage they are in, rather than just the number on the cake.

A first birthday and a fifth birthday can feel a world apart. Instead of looking for a single “perfect children’s gift”, start with what the child enjoys doing now.

For the newest arrivals

Think about the family as well as the baby. A memory journal, useful cotton clothing or muslin cloths can be a welcome gesture. For play, choose an item designed for the baby’s age and use it as its maker intends. Keep gifts out of a baby’s sleeping space unless official safe-sleep guidance says otherwise.

For busy little hands

An age-appropriate shape sorter, chunky puzzle or large building bricks offers something to do, undo and try again. Always check the specific product’s age label, small-parts warnings and supervision guidance before buying.

For growing interests

An art case, a book about a favourite subject or a garden kit can turn “they like drawing” into an afternoon with a purpose. Ask a parent what is already in the toy cupboard; a quick question can prevent a duplicate.

The best final check is practical: will there be room for it, will it need batteries, and is an adult happy to help?
